🙏🏻Somvati Amavasya, Sunday Saptami, Mangalwari Chaturthi, Budhwari Ashtami – these four dates are said to be equal to solar eclipse.

🙏🏻The chanting-meditation, bathing, charity and Shradh done in these are renewable. (Shiva Purana, Vidyeshwara Samhita: Chapter 10)

Bhishma Ashtami
🙏🏻The Ashtami of Shukla Paksha of Magha month is called Bhishma Ashtami. There is a special significance of fasting on this date. This time this fast is on Wednesday, February 08. According to religious scriptures, on this day Bhishma Pitamah gave up his life when the sun was Uttarayan.
🙏🏻This fast is done in his memory. On this day, every Hindu should offer Kush, sesame seeds and water for the sake of Bhishma Pitamah, even if his parents are alive. By observing this fast a person gets beautiful and virtuous children.

Maaghe Maasi Sitaashtamyaan Satilan Bheeshmatarpanam. Shraaddhach ye Naraahkuryuste syuhasantatibhaagin:.. (hemaadri) 

According to the Mahabharata, the person who performs tarpan, water donation etc. for Bhishma on Magh Shukla Ashtami, his sins of the whole year are destroyed.

Shuklashtamyan tu maghasya dadyad bhishmay yo jalam.
Samvatsarkrit papam tatkshnadeva nasyati.

Do Bhishma Ashtami fast like this
On the morning of Bhishma Ashtami, after taking bath etc., if possible, one should take a bath on the banks of a holy river or lake. If you are not able to go to the river or lake, then after bathing properly at home, taking sesame, water, etc. in your hand for the purpose of Bhishma Pitamah, should perform apasavya (carrying the thread on the right shoulder) and facing south, with the following mantras-

Vayaghrapadgotraya Sankrityapravaraya Ch.
Gangaputraya Bhishmay is always Brahmacharine.
Bhishma: Shantanvo Veer: Satyawadi Jitendriyah.
Abhirabhidravapnotu putrapautrochitam kriyaam.

🙏🏻 After this, again after being savya (carrying Janeu on the left shoulder) one should offer Arghya to Gangaputra Bhishma with this mantra-

Vasunamavataraya Shantoratmajay Ch.
Arghyandadami Bhishmay Abalbrahmacharine.
