🌷 Nagpanchami 🌷
🙏🏻 On the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Shravan month, people celebrate Nagpanchami, a festival dedicated to snakes. This year, it falls on Monday, August 21. According to tradition, snakes are worshipped on this day as they are regarded as gods in Hinduism. The scriptures, such as Mahabharata, narrate the origin of snakes and their prominent names, such as Sheshnag, Vasuki, Takshak, and so on. On this Nagpanchami, we will tell you about the main snakes mentioned in the sacred texts.-
🐍 karkotak Nag
Karkotak belongs to the group of Shiva’s followers. As per the legend, Kadru, the mother of all snakes, gave them a curse that they would be burnt in the snake sacrifice. Fearing this, Kambal Nag fled to the world of Brahma, Shankhchud to the state of Manipur, Kaliya Nag to the Yamuna river, Dhritarashtra to Nag Prayag, Elapatra to the realm of Brahma and the rest went to Kurukshetra to meditate.
🙏🏻 At Brahmaji’s request, Karkotak Nag worshipped the Shiva Linga that was in front of Mahamaya in the Mahakal forest. Shiva was happy and said – Those who follow the snake faith, they will be safe. Then the Karkotak snake went inside the same Shivling. From then on, that linga is known as Karkoteshwar. It is said that those who pray to Karkoteshwar Shivling on Panchami, Chaturdashi and Sunday are free from snake bites.
🐍 Kaliya Nag
As per Shrimad Bhagwat, Kalia Nag lived in the Yamuna river with his wives. His poison made the water of Yamuna river toxic. Shri Krishna saw this and jumped into the Yamuna river in anger. There he fought with Kalia Nag fiercely. Finally, Shri Krishna overpowered Kalia Nag. Then Kalia Nag’s wives begged Shri Krishna to spare Kalia Nag. Shri Krishna told them to leave the Yamuna river and go somewhere else. Following Shri Krishna’s order, Kalia and his snake family left the Yamuna river and moved elsewhere.
Apart from these, snakes like Kambal, Shankhpal, Padma and Mahapadma etc. have also been described as worshipable in religious texts.
