This year the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

This is the festival of worship of Sun, when Sun enters Capricorn from Sagittarius, Kharmas also ends and all auspicious works begin.
According to the Puranas, Makar Sankranti leads to Sun Uttarayan and in such auspicious coincidence, bathing, charity, chanting mantras and sun worship on Makar Sankranti gives more virtue than the charity done on other days.

🔯 Importance of Punya-Mahapunya period-:
Punya and Mahapunya period have special importance on Makar Sankranti. It is a religious belief that from this day the doors of heaven open. In the holy and great times of Makar Sankranti, bathing in the Ganges, worshiping the sun, donating, chanting mantras wash away the sins of the person’s births.

Bathing—:
On the day of Makar Sankranti, one should take bath in a holy river first thing in the morning, if this is not possible, take a bath by adding some Ganges water to your bath water.

Sun worship—:
After bathing in the morning, the rising Sun Narayan should be offered water mixed with water, jaggery, red flowers, rose leaves, kumkum, Akshat etc. in a copper vessel.

Chanting Gayatri Mantra–:
After worshiping the Sun, one should chant the Gayatri Mantra by sitting on a seat for some time, also worship your favorite deities.

Donation for Cow—:
After getting up from worship, do take out some donation for the cow like jaggery, fodder etc.

Remember the ancestors too:
Don’t forget to pay obeisance to your forefathers on this day, do take out some donation for them too.
It is also auspicious to make offerings to ancestors on this day. This gives the blessings of the ancestors.

Donation for poor and needy-:
On this day, donate food grains, sesame seeds, jaggery, rice, moong, wheat, clothes, blankets to the poor and needy. By doing this, the grace of Shani and Surya Dev is received.

🌷 According to Narada Purana
“Makarsthe Ravau Ganga Yatra Kutravagahita. Punati Snanpanadyarnayantindrapuram Jagat.
🌞 Wherever a bath is taken in the Ganges while the sun is in Capricorn, it purifies the whole world through bathing etc. and finally reaches Indralok.
🌷 According to Srishti Khand of Padmapuran, one should bathe in Makar Sankranti. This gives the fruit of ten thousand cows. Tarpan, donation and worship of God done at that time is renewable.
🌷 According to Garudpuran, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, lunar eclipse and solar eclipse, it is rare in all the three worlds to go to Gayathirth and offer Pind Daan.
👉🏻 On the day of Makar Sankranti, Lord Surya (milk, curd, ghee) to get Lakshmi and get rid of diseases, Lord Surya to get rid of calamities and enemies, Lord Shiva with sesame-jaggery, clothes to get fame and knowledge, knowledge etc. Since then Devguru Brihaspati should be worshiped in Mahapunyakal / Punyakal.
👉🏻 On the day of Makar Sankranti, use of sesame (both white and black) and donation of sesame is especially beneficial. Especially sweets made from sesame and jaggery like Revdi, Gajak etc. Sesame seeds should also be mixed in the bath water in the morning.
